When Carolyn's mother suggested that they put together a new photo album, Carolyn was ecstatic. She loved the idea very much, and thought it would be a good way to spend more quality time together. Carolyn's mother had even given her the honor of choosing the perfect album for the occasion.

Carolyn took the task at hand very seriously. This album would be in her family for generations to come, just like the others, and she wanted future generations to know of the good taste their ancestors had. She ended up purchasing a royal blue album with gold lettering and spine. The pages were very fine quality and would withstand many turns from even the harshest hands.

On the day that her mother had planned this occasion, Carolyn brought the album downstairs to the study in a box. She'd left the appearance of the album a secret for the fun of it. As she walked into the study she noticed the other album and pictures skewed all over the desk. Ready to get started, she anxiously awaited her mothers arrival.

Elizabeth was very pleased with the album that Carolyn had picked out and she told her so. They began putting loose pictures in little piles, some to be placed in the proper album and others to be put into the one they were focusing on. Then they took some of the best photos from the specialty albums and agreed the new one they were working on would be really fine indeed.

"Carolyn this was the day you came home with your driver's license. You were so thrilled that day, remember? You announced that now you could escape from this prison. Here are four pages of pictures of your first car. You must have done this. I tried not to spoil you but couldn't think of a good reason to say no to a car for your sixteenth birthday. Then Roger, Ned, Matthew and Bill all said that to be safe on these roads you should have a brand new one. Then of course a sports car handles better so that is what you got."

Liz laughed. "Look at all these, Carolyn. I think everytime you changed your outfit you had to take another picture of you and your car. Who on earth did you get to take these? Matthew? Guests? I didn't know about this," she said, amused.

Carolyn was happy that her mother had been pleased with the album; she had hoped she would be. Getting straight to work, they ended up looking through pictures of Carolyn and her first car . . . the car she still had.

"I remember how excited I had been this day, mother. It was definitely a thrill and the car was a perfect choice!" It was true, she really had been extremely happy and felt very lucky that everyone cared enough to get her such nice things for her birthday. Having a car allowed her to act more like kids her own age, which is what Carolyn wanted to do deep down more than anything.

"Well, I suppose that Joe took a lot of these pictures mother, oh, but I really can't say I remember! I guess I was just so thrilled, but I am sorry that I didn't have you take them for me. I suppose I figured that you would think it to silly and a bother." Carolyn admired the pictures, noting her sense of style, even at sixteen.

"The pictures will make a perfect addition to this new album. Just think of what generations will think of my clothes and that car!" Laughing at her own joke, Carolyn laid the pictures in place on their respective album pages.

They selected photos in silence for awhile. Mrs. Johnson brought in the tea and cookies Elizabeth had asked for and stopped to look at some of their work for a moment. Elizabeth had hesitated to select a few photos from her wedding album but knew that a few were needed to make the project complete. She picked it up and then suddenly remembered something she had wanted to tell Carolyn.

"Carolyn, remember when we were at the beach a few weeks ago and I told you that the framer for Sam Evans was going to get some wood for his frames? Well, he came by with a truck and a chain saw and also brought us some firewood and kindling and put it in the shed....such a nice young man. Anyway, the odd thing is he brought a shovel he found in the woods. I shudder to think why anyone would be digging in the woods here at Collinwood." She stood up to stretch and then sat back down to select a few wedding photos of her and Paul Stoddard.

Carolyn thanked Mrs. Johnson for the tea and cookies, and noticed how she looked over their shoulders at the progress. She figured that Mrs. Johnson must have just been interested in what they were doing, but, who knew really. The cookies where a little hard, but Carolyn didn't want to spoil the moment long enough to mention it.

"Wow. That is strange. I wonder what on earth someone would wont to be digging up?" Carolyn thought about all the strange things that were always going on in town. "Although, it is funny you should mention the woods." Carolyn hesitated a second wondering if this really was the best time to mention this. She hated when her mother worried about her, and she was afraid that her little secret would cause worry. "Anyway, the other day I was walking back from the Old House, where I'd went to pay a visit to Barnabas. He wasn't there, but, the whole way back I kept getting a very strange feeling that someone was following me. Needless to say I think I'm a little spooked to go to the Old House by myself for a while, which is why I couldn't deliver that message for you yesterday to Julia." Carolyn felt better getting that out in the open.

She proceeded to glance over the pictures of her mothers wedding. She wished her father was still around today, as she'd like to know him. He seemed to make her mother happy, so he had to be a good guy, right?

Elizabeth sighed. "I know darling, I can go for days without thinking of anything uncomfortable but sometimes I get really frightened in the woods. Even in broad daylight. Sometimes it feels like someone is watching me."

Elizabeth hoped that Carolyn didn't notice the cookies were a little hard. Mrs. Johnson certainly wasn't perfect but she didn't want to lose her. She never knew when something would upset her housekeeper or make her defensive.

"You know, I would have thought that Barnabas would finally give in and get a telephone. I guess this is one way for him to better maintain his privacy."

Elizabeth selected some pictures of her and Paul. "He was so handsome, Carolyn. So much more exciting than the men in Collinsport. I couldn't see that it was my money he was in love with. I'm sorry darling, but I want you to know the truth."

Carolyn sighed, "Well, I suppose that is the problem the Collins' have always had; not knowing if someone is actually after money or what." Carolyn strangely, briefly thought about Joe. She was nearly positive that he wasn't after money, but their wasn't anyway to know now a days.

Ironically, a few pictures of Joe and Carolyn were next in the stack of pictures in front of Carolyn. Depressed by the thoughts of the shattered relationship, Carolyn threw them aside. "I don't think that these need to be part of this historic album do they," she asked her mother. Carolyn knew the answer of course, but acting childish about the matter was more interesting than sucking it up and dealing with it.

"Well darling, that's up to you. You can always change your mind later." They continued to sort, trying to get a little bit of everything.

"Roger was the one who had a lot of gold diggers after him. He was a cad when it came to dating and usually went out with someone who was chasing him. He married Laura because she was pregnant and I'll never understand his marriage with Cassandra."

"These turned out really good and would probably be of interest to future generations. It's when we wore the clothes of our ancestors for the costume party Barnabas had when he was almost finished working on the house." Liz was thoughtful. "That was the evening that Josette Collins started to speak through Vicki. That was the last thing I expected I'd be involved in and now we've had several seances here."

"Well, the rest of the world doesn't have to know about that. These just look like photos of a costume party. It's odd, Barnabas looked so good and he doesn't show up in any of these."

Carolyn continued to think of Joe unwillingly. "Well . . . I guess it wont hurt to stick maybe just these two really good pictures in there." The pictures were of Carolyn and Joe getting ready to go out for a night of partying, and they were both looking at their best.

"Yes, I still can't believe he married Cassandra. I still remember vividly all the weird stuff that came about while she was here. I mean, I know our house is normally a little strange, but she was just . . . well, weird!" Carolyn laughed a second and then continued looking at pictures.

She had enjoyed that costume party. "Being Millicent was actually really fun. It was strange how we all fit in so well acting as our ancestors. It is a shame that no one captured dear cousin Barnabas in any of these pictures. He did look quite stunning, as did we all." Carolyn stared at one of the pictures for a few seconds. "Mother, I could have sworn that I was talking with Barnabas in this picture. Oh, but I guess that I have to be mistaken. You can't just not show up in a picture!"

They continued looking threw pictures. Carolyn ran across a few casual shots of her and David out on the beach. "Well, what a shock: David on a good day!"

"Yes, thank goodness that David's good days aren't so rare any more. He was a little horror there for awhile. I know I wouldn't admit it out loud and he can still be a pill," Elizabeth said. "I think he's highly intelligent and simply doesn't have enough stimultation and also companions his own age. He's stuck here with us and all our problems. There I go making excuses for him again."

"Remember when he went through that phase where he thought that Barnabas was trying to kill him? He certainly was preoccupied with death for awhile. Such morbid interests."

They continued working and then Elizabeth said something very uncharacteristic of her. "Carolyn, I wonder if when we're long dead and gone, we'll ever watch our descendents look through this photo album and be curious about us and make inaccurate guesses about how our lives really were."

"Oh well mother. He is a boy, and I'm not sure we'll ever fully understand them completely! I'm just glad that we can have normal days around here often without him going off and getting lost or hurt." Carolyn knew perfectly well that he did do it all for attention, but after awhile it got to be quite annoying; to her at least.

Her mothers statement was like slamming on the breaks on an icy road: sudden and uncalled for, at least in her opinion. "Mother, I'm not sure really. I guess I have never thought about it." Truthfully, Carolyn didn't want to think about what would be when she was dead, and it wasn't her favorite conversation in any situation. "But please, don't get into another one of your fixations with death, mother. It makes me worry about you."

With uneasy conversation in the mix, the two finished their family photo album in record time, and in complete silence. It's not that they had nothing to say, but nearly that they'd said all they wanted to say. With a new finished photo album in the mix, the photos in the album would be remembered by many to come; the day it took to make it: only by two.
