The weather in Collinsport had been unusually mild that month. After the afternoon spent looking at family pictures with her daughter, Elizabeth allowed herself time to daydream about the past as she went about her busy day. Someday, the photos they'd looked at would be part of the Collins family history and she was pleased that Carolyn was interested enough to help her put them in good order.

This afternoon, a few days after they'd looked at photos in front of the fireplace, Elizabeth and her daughter decided to have a spontaneous picnic on the beach. Mrs. Johnson made them sandwiches and they took a bottle of wine and some plastic glasses. The tide was out and they wanted to go for a long walk before having their picnic lunch. They stashed it behind some rocks, where it would stay cool and began a leisurely walk.

Carolyn decided that today was a perfect day for the beach. She was ecstatic that her mother had actually planned such a glamorous outing for the two of them, and was grateful that Mrs. Johnson had taken the time to do the preparation herself. As fun as spending time with her mother up at Collinwood was, the beach definitely topped it all, and Carolyn almost felt like a young girl again.

"So mother, what town gossip have you managed to pick up on?" Carolyn thought of that remark afterwards as almost an unintentional insult, knowing that the only way her mother received gossip was either from Vicki, Uncle Roger, or Carolyn herself. Unless Joe or Maggie visited and brought with them a new story from town. But even still, she figured that her mother might have some other means of communication, whatever they may be.

Elizabeth smiled. Carolyn's enthusiasm seemed fitting with the blue skies and mild breeze. "Well darling, I can't think of anything right off hand. You know I hate people gossiping about us so I feel I need to appear like I'm rather above it." They walked on a little further.

"You'd be surprised but the juiciest things I hear about the people in Collinsport I hear from your Uncle Rodger.
He's remarkably observant and for all of his pompous airs he's very interested in the affairs of others. And he's not one to be shy with his opinions either."

After walking a little ways further she added, "Roger has generated a fair share of gossip about himself too, as you well know."

Carolyn smiled in a sigh of relief that her mother hadn't been offended by her nearly obscene remark, as they continued their walk along the beach. She listened attentively at her mother's gossip, but also took in the atmosphere around her.

"Yes, Uncle Roger does have his fair share of gossip following him around, doesn't he!" Carolyn knew that not only her Uncle had gossip in the town. Being a member of the Collins family was guarantee that you would have something good or bad, true or false, said about you at some point or another on a normal basis.

"Lets see . . . the latest gossip I've heard is . . ." Carolyn paused as she realized that she hadn't heard much interesting gossip lately. Hesitating for a second Carolyn soon changed the subject. "Oh, who cares what the people in town have to say about us, lets just talk about something more interesting, hey?" Over time, Carolyn had grown quite bored over the silly stories that people had made up about her family, and was no longer in the mood to discuss them. She was here to have fun with her mother, and decided that town gossip wouldn't be a very fun conversation after all.

"So, I got a new catalog in town today, and am wondering if you'd like to look at it with me. They have some really nice new clothing out this season, and figured it'd be great fun to have a little shopping spree: while still at home!" Carolyn was nearly sure that her mother wouldn't turn down an offer to indulge in fancy clothing, jewelry, and other assortment of items.

"Yes, I'll look at it with you. I'm proud that you know your own taste so well, Carolyn." Elizabeth spotted some small pieces of sea glass and picked them up. "There might be something in there for me as well. I'm a firm believer in looking one's best, no matter what is going on. I can think better if I'm confident that my hair and the rest of my appearance have been properly attended to."

Elizabeth looked thoughtful. "You know before Mrs Johnson came, Matthew was a great help to me in keeping up with the house and of course he took care of the grounds. I was aware that I was somewhat misunderstood for making sure I was well groomed for the day even if it were a day of housecleaning and laundry. There were no hair-in-curlers and shuffling around in old house slippers for me. Who knew when someone would drop by--the plant manager, my attorneys or accountants." They were silent as they made their way carefully over some larger rocks.

"You know dear, it really isn't so difficult to take care of a home wearing heels and pearls," Elizabeth said with a little laugh. "Most of the Collins women have always cared for their appearance. Oh, there have been a few, I'm recalling portraits I've seen of Abigail Collins, that dressed plainly but most chose to present themselves as quite the elegant ladies."

Carolyn thought about what her mother was saying, realizing that for the most part is was true. There had been maybe an instance or two that her mother had been caught off guard and hadn't been dressed her best, but those where strange times, and couldn't be helped for the most part.

"Well, when you want to, just tell me and I'll fetch the catalog," Carolyn stated excitedly. It was always a pleasure looking over new clothes with her mother: even at their own house. She'd of course, gotten used to it over the years.

The beach was getting more beautiful as they walked along. The waves pleasantly washed up on the shore, bringing with them small sea treasures of it's own. The sun and the wind created the perfect temperature, making for an overly enjoyable experience. Carolyn didn't know how long a magnificent day like today could last, but she was in no hurry to find out.

"I'd like to look at some of the jewelry styles more closely," Elizabeth said. "Most of our heirloom jewelry is in a vault, but there is an emerald that belonged to Judith Collins that I especially love and want to put into a modern setting. I'm thinking it would make a lovely pendant."

The cries of seagulls could be heard; it was a familiar background sound. "I'm going to have Mr. Braithwaite do the work. Mrs. Johnson can take the emerald and the sketch next time she goes to town. Oh I didn't mention Carolyn, Sam Evans made the sketch for me from my description. He was at the house the other afternoon when you were out. He'd heard that we were clearing some trees at the edge of the property closest to town and he was asking for permission to let his framer get some wood. They use old New England lumber for the paintings he sells to tourists."

Elizabeth thought a moment and said, "I like the design idea, but I'd just like to look at the catalog to make sure before I go ahead. Was there anything in particular you were shopping for? You know, I'd like for you to look at the emerald and sketch before I go ahead. Someday it will be yours, darling. Unless you really don't care for it, of course. In that case, perhaps when David marries he could give it to his bride."

"In particular? No, not really I guess. I mean, I'll definitely be getting a few new dresses for this season, and probably mindlessly browse the rest of the book, unsure of what I'll find." Carolyn did mind occasionally buying things that she'd probably never wear: she just liked to buy. She also was occasionally in the giving mood, and it always helped to have something spare sitting around. She finally said, "I'm mostly just interested in looking, as it's been a while since I just looked at a catalog, instead of just going to the store."

Upon mention of the antique emerald, Carolyn had to giggle. "Why mother, could you honestly imagine me wearing that little old thing!" Like so many times before, Carolyn had spoken before thinking, and had said something she shouldn't have. She knew that that jewel was part of her family, and her mother treasured it ever so dearly. "Oh mother, I'm sorry. I don't know what's gotten into me lately, I seem to be upsetting everyone unintentionally." As if it would help clear up the mess she just spilled out, Carolyn quickly stated, "I'll be happy to proudly wear that emerald."

Carolyn pondered the thought of why she always seemed to kill the mood whenever she was having a great time with someone. She always seemed to somehow stir up some sort of mess, whatever it may be. And so, Carolyn just came to the conclusion that her: her luck. "Well, I suppose that we . . . we ought to be getting back to our luncheon now," Carolyn said, trying to change subjects rather abruptly. "I think that I have actually became quite hungry."

"Yes let's be getting back." Elizabeth considered the emerald pendant. "You know I don't expect you to wear anything that doesn't suit your taste Carolyn. Don't apologize for speaking your mind. After all I usually do and I raised you to be clear about what you do and do not like. Besides, this is just fashion, not a matter of life or death."

They were headed back towards where they started. "You might change your mind after Mr. Braithwaite puts the jewel in a new setting or you might grow to like it years from now. After all I intend to be wearing it a good many more years. If you are never fond of it that is quite fine by me. It isn't as though you won't have lots of heirloom jewelry to choose from."

After a few moments Elizabeth mentioned to her daughter, "I'm glad we're heading back. This exercise has made me hungry and I was beginning to worry about being negligent in leaving the wine there. Can you imagine a child like David finding a bottle of wine on the beach? I'm afraid I've had a lapse in good judgement."

Carolyn was greatly satisfied that her mother hadn't been too upset. Who knew, maybe one day she truly would grow to love that emerald pendant. For now though, she would stick to wearing cute earrings and necklaces, and leave the pendants and pearls to her mother.

"Yes mother, I must agree that this walk has been good for you. It's so very nice to see you out of that old stuffy house sometimes, even if it's just to walk over to the Old House, or down here to the beach." Carolyn was still secretly mystified that her mother had in fact planned such a fabulous luncheon for the two of them on the beach: what a beautiful idea and considerate thinking she had done.

She laughed at the thought of David finding a bottle of wine. As mischievous as David is, if he did anything with it he'd probably hide it somewhere and then lie and laugh as the both of them ran around looking for it. And as always, he'd go unpunished for wrecking a perfectly good evening. "Well mother, one can't always be on their toes and make the wisest decisions every second of the day can they? I'm perfectly sure that everything will be as we left it and it will all be splendid.

The two arrived back at their spot of picnic. Carolyn waited as her mother retrieved the food items, and thought about how this meal would be better than any meal ever served up at the house or even at the finest restaurant in town.
