A Search Through History (CarolynQuentin's GhostElizabeth)

Post  Carolyn Stoddard on 8th August 2009, 21:45

Once Carolyn finally got back to Collinwood, she didn't really know how to confront the matter at hand. No one was downstairs, which was a good thing, as she would look less suspicious. Her mother was no where to be found, but she had to be in the house somewhere, Carolyn knew. She decided that she would look through the old family history book in the drawing room for answers.

Once in the drawing room she closed the doors behind her, which was a normal occurrence at the house. She walked over to the desk and opened the large, old family history book that David had left there a couple days ago. Carolyn wasn't sure if this woman even had any relation to the Collin's name, but since this particular book was relatively recent, she figured that it was worth a shot. Although, there was no telling when this woman lived.

Carolyn spent the next 20 minutes flipping quickly through this family history book, which proved to be no help at all. "This is completely hopeless," Carolyn thought. "Why did I agree to do this," she sighs. Carolyn closed the book and sets it back on the corner of the desk and then began to rest her head on her hands for a bit. Searching pictures upon pictures was actually more tiring than it seems.

Just as Carolyn was moments from accidentally dozing off, the doors open, and her mother steps in. Startled by the sudden occurrence, Carolyn jumped when she heard her.

"Oh I'm sorry Carolyn, I didn't mean to startle you. Are you feeling all right, dear? It isn't like you to be napping in here in the afternoon."

Elizabeth smiled fondly at her daughter. "My, and looking through the Collins family history books? Whatever is going on, Carolyn? You look upset, has something happened?"

"Oh no Mother, I'm fine. I have just become rather tired after looking through this book," Carolyn said, standing up and smiling at her mother. "I really don't know how to put this, Mother, so I'm just going to tell it as it is."

"Today at the Evan's cottage, Sam found a strange sketch, and he and I saw something weird. Also, Joe . . . Joe found a locket." Carolyn extends her arm and hands the locket to her mother. She then grabs the sketch and hands it to her.

"Maggie wanted me to try and figure out who this woman is, but I have been unsuccessful so far. I thought that she would be in this history book on the desk, but she isn't. Do you have any idea who she is, mother?"

"Hmmmm well, I don't know Carolyn. She certainly isn't one of our ancestors. She does look familiar, though."

Elizabeth studied the locket and said, "The locket is beautiful, it looks really old." She looked at the sketch again. "The clothes look like she may have been a servant. You know the Collins's always considered most of the servants to be a part of the family, so there should be good records if she belonged here. Carolyn, she looks to be from about the time that Judith was Mistress of Collinwood; that would be in the 1800's. Try some of the older books."

Elizabeth looked up at the portrait of Jeremiah. "You know in those days, almost all the servants were from around the area. People didn't move around as much or change jobs often like they do now."

"Ok, I appreciate your help," Carolyn says, giving her mother a quick hug. "You always seem to be a help in some way."

"Do you really think she would have been a servant? She is far pretty; I would have never of guessed that. I suppose that I need to go look in the study for the correct history book. I am sure that Maggie wants me to be as quick about this as possible. Everyone, including me, was pretty shook up by all of this, and it's best to get to the bottom of it soon, I think."

Carolyn turned to head towards the study, but then turned back around to her Mother. "Would you like to join me in the search?"

Elizabeth smiled at her daughter. "Of course I'll help, darling," she said.

"Being too pretty doesn't mean that the girl couldn't have been a servant. I was going by the way she is dressed. It she were a Collins having her portrait sketched she would be wearing more jewels and finer clothes. Our ancestors considered appearances most important."

Then she laughed. "Carolyn, you've heard the stories about Quentin Collins. He had quite a reputation that has carried on until this very day. Why, I think it was a requirement for female servants to be attractive whenever Quentin had anything to say about it. She may very well have been here around the time that he lived at Collinwood."

"Oh yes, I know the stories of Quentin mother, quite lovely they are!" The two walk into the study. Carolyn waited as her mother looked for the correct book, as she seemed to know what she was after. The book sat on the desk, and Carolyn walked over to it beside her mother. "Between the two of us, we ought to find this girl, if she is here to find," says Carolyn. The two open the book and begin searching page by page for the mystery woman.

For awhile they paged through the books in silence. Occasionally they would comment on something of what they read and saw but they remained focused on the object of their search.

It was pleasant for Liz to spend time with her daughter this way. At one point, she recalled something that Carolyn had said and looked up. "You know, Carolyn, I wouldn't take anything Sam Evans says with a grain of salt. Especially when he's been drinking which seems to be quite often from what I've heard. I haven't seen him for years except for that time he came here looking for Roger, around the time Bill Malloy died. He wasn't making much sense then and I wouldn't be surprised if he thinks he sees things from time to time."

I can go and ask Mrs. Johnson to make some tea if you want. Just let me know when you're ready.

Carolyn was enjoying this time with her mother. Since her original plans for a nice evening was wrecked, this was definitely the next best thing. She enjoyed her mothers company very dearly.

"Oh mother, so are you saying that you don't believe what I saw either? I saw what Mr. Evan's saw, I'm sure of it." The two continued flipping through the pages without any luck still. "I mean, I know that he had been drinking some, but what we found, and saw, it was just too real to be in our imagination." Carolyn felt unusually unhappy with her mother now. She didn't like it when she was guarded with distrust, especially from her mother.

"Well, it looks like we are going to be here for a while. You can go get Mrs. Johnson to fix some tea; I'll continue to look."

"Oh darling, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to imply that you don't know the difference between your imagination and what's real. Living in this house, I've certainly seen a few odd things myself."

Liz looked at her daughter with concern. "This sketch is real and this locket is certainly real. I'm sorry Carolyn," she repeated. "I know you wouldn't be spending a lovely afternoon indoors looking through old books if you didn't think it was important."

Elizabeth looked relieved that her daughter didn't seem too upset. A few moments later she exclaimed, "Carolyn, I believe I've found it. This looks a lot like the girl in the sketch. It says her name was Molly Devlin and she worked here but it doesn't say doing what. What do you think?"

Elizabeth handed Carolyn the book and said she'd be back with some tea. "You can see what you think, but it looks to me like the same woman," she said as she left the room.

Carolyn almost felt guilty of thinking that her mother had doubted her, but quickly forgot the matter when she looked at the picture in the history book. She glanced back and forth between the sketch and the picture in the book. They were remarkably very similar, and Carolyn noticed that the woman in the picture also wore the locket. "Well, I guess this is who I am looking for. If only I knew what her purpose was. Why is she so important?"

Mildly satisfied, Carolyn went to go take a seat in one of the arm chairs, but was suddenly jarred when the lights started to flicker. Startled, Carolyn glanced at the lights. "What is happening," she thought. It was then that the lights went out, and then immediately came back on. What came with the lights, however, was unbelievable, unnatural, and frightened Carolyn greatly.

"Who . . . who are you," Carolyn cries, as she edges towards the door. "What do you want," she screams, realizing that the door is locked.

Re: A Search Through History (Carolyn\Quentin's Ghost\Elizabeth)

Post  Quentin Collins on 9th August 2009, 00:01

In a room filled with terror, a restless spirit, Quentin Collins, appears. He seems to be perfectly comfortable in the situation, and had an uncalled for smile on his face. He stepped towards Carolyn, noticing that this frightened her dearly. When she screamed "What do you want," he let out a deep laugh. He noted the growing fear in her face, and let off ever so slightly.

Quentin moved over to the desk and picked up the locket. He held it up and a longing feeling came over his face. He than admired the sketch and the picture in the book. A slight smile came over his face and then changed back into a frown.

Quentin took one last look at Carolyn, and then just as fast as he appeared, he disappeared in thin air. The lights went back to perfectly normal, and the door creaked open ever so slightly.

Elizabeth requested that Mrs. Johnson make a tray of tea and iced lemon cookies while she made a few phone calls to the cannery. When the housekeeper brought the silver tray to the drawing room she looked around for Carolyn.

"That will be fine, Mrs. Johnson. Just leave the tray there. Carolyn and I are in the study and I'll take it in."

Elizabeth tidied the desk and carried the small tray towards the study. It was pleasant for her to be spending an afternoon with her daughter just like any normal, functional family. "I thought I'd left that door open," she thought as she got nearer to the study. It was open a crack and she shoved it open all the way with her foot.

She was about to set the tray on a small table when she glanced at Carolyn's face and almost dropped it. "Carolyn, are you O.K? What happened? You look pale, like you've seen a ghost."

"Mother," Carolyn nearly screamed, when she appeared in the room. She tried to calm herself down and pull herself together before continuing. "Mother, just as you left the room," Carolyn paused, "something strange happened. I was going to sit down when the lights suddenly flicked on and off and this man appeared." Carolyn noted the look of concern on her mothers face, like she didn't believe her. "I know you think it unreal and just in my mind . . . but I saw a ghost just now! He looked remarkably close to the portraits of Quentin Collins!"

Carolyn was beginning to become overly hysterical and her head was spinning. "Oh . . . I think I need to sit down for a minute, I'm not feeling good at all."

"Please Carolyn, sit down. Sit down here, it will be all right." Elizabeth helped her daughter into the nearest chair. She looked around the room, for whatever she might find and saw nothing. "Just when everything was going so well," she thought.

"Darling, have some tea. Or would you rather have some brandy?" Elizabeth didn't know what to think or whether to believe Carolyn. She didn't want to think about it at all. What she said was, "Well if any ghost would show up around here it would be Quentin Collins. Especially since this sketch of a beautiful woman seems to be significant somehow."

"Let's put the book away for now, darling. Are you starting to feel better?" Elizabeth glanced around the room again. She wanted to be careful not to upset her daughter.

While sitting in the chair, and having her mother try her best to comfort her, she let everything sink in. Carolyn then noticed her mother suspiciously look around the room. "You don't believe me, do you? That's just like you mother. You have no problem trying to believe the silly things that David comes up with, but when your own daughter claims to of seen such things, you find it unbelievable."

Carolyn, still a little uneasy, jumps up out of her chair and walks over to the desk. "This, mother, is where I saw him. You can believe me, or not, but I'm telling the truth!" She then paces around the room for a few seconds, holding her head. Carolyn then stops to look her mother in the eyes and her face turns from anger to sorry. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap at you. I guess that this is just causing me a great deal of stress."

"Let's not fuss at each other Carolyn. I'm aware that something's going on but how can I possibly know what it is?" She noticed that some color was coming back into her daughter's face.

"We can put the book and sketch and locket right here for now and solve this mystery later. Maybe a nap or a walk along the beach would do you good. Or you could have Mrs. Johnson fix you a sandwich. You haven't touched any of the cookies."

Elizabeth began to leave the room and turned and looked at Carolyn, waiting for her to follow. "I know this is important to you darling, but can't it wait until your mind is more clear and you're feeling a little better? Come along now."
