PART 11: Unexpected Work (Harry/Kathryn/Mrs. Johnson)

Post  Harry Johnson on 27th December 2009, 21:09

Since his mysterious fainting the day before, Harry had since recovered and had started off the day just like any other. After going downstairs for a simple breakfast and coffee alone, he ran into Carolyn who was getting ready to go into town. Knowing that he couldn't take his mothers car out again, he decided to ask her for a ride into town; it was an arrangement which had actually been suggested, much to Carolyn's disliking. She had no choice but to agree to Harry, which gave him just enough time to go upstairs and get his jacket, along with an antique urn, which was his real reason for wanting to go out.

Harry had taken the urn from Quentin's room up in the west wing, knowing that no one would miss it and that it was probably worth at least a little bit of money; money he could really use. As he got into Carolyn's car, he kept the urn wrapped up into his jacket, with a clever story just in case asked about it.

Once in town Harry went his own separate way, checking to make sure that Carolyn wasn't following him first. He finally arrived in front of the antique shop with a smile on his face; Harry could only imagine how much this object would be worth, as money meant more than value to him. As he entered he noticed no one in the store except the person who worked there, none other than Kathryn Collins herself. "Just wonderful," he thought, walking up to the desk, still hiding the urn under his jacket.

Kathryn Collins had nearly knocked some porcelain vases off of a small table in the antique shop. Really, this place is beginning to get cluttered, she thought. I'd better stop and rearrange these before one gets broken.

She was carefully moving things and her thoughts went back to the strange scene at the cemetery yesterday. She was sure that Julia knew more than she was telling. It was easy to feel annoyed with Harry because of his behavior but Kathryn was glad he was O.K. He had truly looked bewildered and frightened; it wasn't just one of his manipulative games.

Poor Harry, she thought. It must be difficult trying to start over in life after being in prison. Collinsport isn't the friendliest town in the world and heaven knows things are strange up at Collinwood. Mrs. Johnson might have good reason to be mean to Harry, but it isn't easy to watch. I wish I could help him, but everytime I have a nice feeling about him, he goes and acts like a jerk.

Just then she heard the bell of the shop and turned to smile at the customer coming in.

Well, thinking of the devil himself, she thought when she saw Harry Johnson.

"Well, well, Ms Kathryn Collins," he said, passing a smile across his face. He stared at the women in discomfort before continuing with his purpose. "Say, one could sell you their old antiques here, yeah? Well, you see," Harry started, pulling the urn out from under his jacket, "I have this here antique of my mothers, and I'd like to see how much you'd offer me for it." He carelessly set the object onto the counter roughly, still staring at Kathryn, waiting for an answer and hoping that she didn't start asking too many questions.

Kathryn took a deep breath and wondered how she was going to deal with the situation. First of all, she doubted that Mrs. Johnson would be giving Harry antiques for him to sell. Second of all, the urn looked familiar.

"Harry, I'm sorry. Really I am, but I don't think the urn is your to sell. I've seen it somewhere before."

She picked it up and then remembered having seen it in the west wing at Collinwood. "This was in Quentin's room. Quentin Collins. I was in their with Julia, Carolyn and Cecillia because....."

She narrowed her eyes at Harry. He had been too interested in other people's business. "This had a silvery powder in it before. We were going to have Julia analyze what it was. What did you do with it Harry?

Like I can get a straight answer from him, she thought.

"Nice try Harry, but this isn't yours to sell. I'm not going to mention this to anyone because I think you've been in enough trouble already."

Harry let out a sigh, knowing that once again his plans for fast money had fallen through. "Look, I didn't mean anything by it . . . I just needed some money, you see? Even Harry Johnson needs money, but who's going to want to hire someone like me." He turned to stare out the dusty windows of the shop to the sunny morning day. "I do apprectiate your not telling this all to my mother; she doesn't need any more trouble to think about."

Harry ignored the questioning about the powdery stuff, deciding that everyone was intitled to a little privacy; he had told her more then enough truth for one day. "I need to watch out for her," Harry thought, knowing how she had ways of stopping his plans before he got to follow through with them; first the library and now this.

Sarah Johnson had just unexpectedly gotten the day off. For once she was caught up with her work and Mrs. Stoddard had taken the children into Bangor. Who knew where Roger was. Thank goodness no one had taken her car without asking so she was now able to go into town and find a way to enjoy the day.

I suppose I'd better check on Harry, she'd thought earlier. He had such a shock yesterday; maybe he needs something from town.

But to her amazement Harry was not in his room. It doesn't make sense, she'd told herself. When he's healthy he sleeps past noon and now that Dr. Hoffman's told him to rest, he's out and about somewhere.

She'd done some shopping already when she thought of the antique shop. She decided to go look around in there and chat with Kathryn Collins for awhile.

When she got to the door, she glanced through the glass and saw a familiar figure. Looking at his face she saw the expression that meant her son was up to no good again. Flinging open the door, she stood there and glared at her son.

"Mother," Harry said, shocked, walking across the room to where she was. "What are you doing here . . ." From the look on her face, he knew that she was wondering the same thing. "This isn't what it looks like - honest," he looked back at Kathryn, completely out of lies for the moment; he knew she said she wouldn't tell on him, but now that his mother was standing right in front of her, how could she not.

Kathryn had been startled when Mrs. Johnson had burst into the shop.

"Umm....Mrs. Johnson....how nice to see you. I was just showing Harry around. We need some part-time help and umm....we're discussing the possiblilty of Harry working here. We actually weren't going to mention it to anyone until we're confident that it will work out."

She almost laughed out loud when she saw the shocked look on Harry's face.

You fool, she thought. With all your practice lying, can't you play along any better than that?

Mrs. Johnson was shocked too. Perhaps she'd misjudged her son and he was actually looking for honest work.

They'll really trust him around money and valuables? she wondered. And as for his manner with the public.....well, good luck with that.

"Oh well, excuse me," she said stiffly. "I didn't mean to pry or intrude. I was just so surprised to see you here, Harry, that's all. Miss Collins, I'll let you get on with your business with my son here. Good day."

I'll have to apologize to Harry later, she thought. To think, my first reaction was to suspect he was trying to sell stolen property.

She turned to give them a final half-smile before she left the shop.

"Good-bye Mother Dearest," Harry said sarcastically as the door closed behind Mrs. Johnson. Turning to face Kathryn again, he looked at her with almost shock. "So, figure you'd help ol' Harry Johnson out, hey . . . give him a job around here," he couldn't understand Kathryn's motive for trying to help him out, but as he looked around at the shop full of valuables he didn't care. "So, when do I start," he asked, with a scheming grin.

"Harry Johnson, I don't expect gratitude from you. But I am going to give you a chance....and let me tell you, if you let me down....if you cause any kind of trouble for me......well, let's just say that you will certainly regret it. It will be worse for you than what happened at Eagle Hill yesterday and what your mother can dish out.....combined! I mean it."

She watched the smirk leave his face. "This isn't the greatest for you, I know. But it's a first step. I want you to return that urn to exactly where you found it; I'm going to check in a few days. You can start here when Dr. Hoffman gives you the go ahead. We'll do your paperwork then. Remember, people will be watching how you handle this opportunity...don't blow it!"

Harry became agitated by Kathryn's attempts at controling him. "Maybe I will, maybe I want," he said, yanking the urn off the counter, refering to her telling him to put it back exactly.

"I'd like to see what she thinks she can do to me," he thought, laughing to himself as he walked towards the door. As he stepped out into the day, he turned back to Kathryn, offering yet another sarcastic smile. "Until we meet again," he said with distaste, nearly letting the door slam behind him.
